Tomorrow marks the beginning of my first journey through the creative chakras. A group of dedicated and intrepid artists and I will meet for the next four Sundays at the peaceful Sama Studio to experience how we can harness the unique power of 4 major energy centers in our body and channel that energy towards our creative goals.
For those of you new to the idea of chakras, I came across a great definition:
"Located along the spine and in
the subtle body, the eight chakras are hubs of electrical and chemical
activity that receive, process and distribute prana, or information,
acting as bridges between the external world and the body. Each center
is associated with specific organs, glands, hormones, nerve plexi,
archetypal themes and emotional states..."
- The Complete Natural Medicine Guide to Women's Health
I love this definition because it so clearly overlays the maps of the human body drawn by both the Yogic and Biomedical systems: and guess what, they match up! Both systems have developed differing ways to describe and view the human body, but essentially, we are talking about the same thing, or, the same meaning: potato, patata!
No more dismissing the Chakra system as airy fairy new-age balderdash: it's simply am incredibly complex matter of cultural interpretation.
So, back to tomorrow. We are starting with the second chakra, or, the reproductive system for those more comfortable in the realm of Western medicine. If you couldn't guess by the major hint I just gave you, our focus on this chakra are the creative waters that lie dormant here, in the pelvic bowl. The element associated with this Chakra, Svadisthana, is water, and the ruling color is orange. The archetypal themes of course relate to healthy creativity, sexuality and sensuality.
Hip-openers like frog pose and butterfly pose stimulate the energy center while slight inversions like bridge pose help send the energy towards the upper chakras, where the creative unconscious eventually finds expression at the fifth center of the throat.
This first class is about tapping into your well of inspiration. It's going to be a class full of fluid movement, bubbling visualizations and, as always lots of journaling, and you guessed it: STREAM OF (un)CONSCIOUSNESS WRITING !
